My Sermons

(At Least a Selection of Them)

There is no greater privilege than to stand before the people of God and proclaim the Word of God. In essence, that’s what preaching is, and a sermon is the result. Sermons are different from stories, but they necessarily involve storytelling because that’s what the Scriptures are doing, telling the story of God and His people. Now, I’m not a preacher in the sense that preaching is primarily what I do for a living. But I am someone who loves to preach, and God has been gracious to continue to grant me opportunities, whether for the church where I’m a member and serve or for other churches and events. My preaching mentor, Dr. Robert Smith, Jr. always said that the sermon is first preached to the preacher. I have found that to be true. So, first and foremost, the sermons below were for me. They benefitted me. They challenged me. They encouraged me. They grew me. By sharing them here, I hope and pray they might do the same for you.

Preached for The Church at Brook Hills on December 31, 2017 as part of our The Promise of Christmas sermon series. This sermon covers John 14:1-14.

This was presented for my doctrinal preaching class at Beeson Divinity School, again under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Smith, Jr. I took on the tension/relationship between faith and works in James 2:14-26. Chris Brooks called this sermon one of the greatest acts of ego he's ever seen. Believe it or not, he meant that as a compliment (I think).
This short sermon was presented during one of my preaching classes at Beeson Divinity School while in a creative preaching class with Dr. Calvin Miller. It's "performed" as a dramatic monologue. I was wearing braces on my feet and lower legs and walked with a cane. Because I began in character, the person recording didn't realize I had begun. That's why it kinda cuts in after I'm already speaking.

Preached for The Church at Brook Hills on January 8, 2023 to kick off our A People Reclaimed sermon series from the Book of Malachi. This sermon covers Malachi 1:1-5.

Preached for The Church at Brook Hills on March 27, 2022 as part of our The Story of God sermon series from the Book of Genesis. This sermon covers Genesis 3:8-15.

Preached for The Church at Brook Hills on July 9, 2017 as part of our Meet Jesus sermon series through the Gospel of Mark. This sermon comes from Mark 16:1-8.

It helps to know that this sermon was preached in an environment designed to look like someone’s basement garage that has been turned into a kind of rec room. It was written to follow the All Things to All People one act Daddy’s Chair and preached at a training week for the Student Life Camps summer staff.

This was the first sermon I preached at Beeson Divinity School while being mentored by Dr. Robert Smith. I've given it in a few different forms at a number of other occasions, but this one, while far from perfect, is my favorite.
